Weapons — Melee
A complete guide to Melee in DayZ Weapons.
Overview
Melee weapons are the primary tools for silent zombie management and early-game player defense in DayZ. Mastering melee conserves precious ammunition and prevents drawing unwanted attention from infected or nearby survivors.
How It Works
DayZ utilizes a stamina-based melee system where holding a weapon (or your fists) allows you to perform light and heavy attacks. You must hold the Right Mouse Button (Aim/Block) to enter defensive stance, which allows you to strafe and parry incoming strikes. Attacking consumes stamina; if your stamina bar is depleted, your attacks become significantly slower and weaker, leaving you vulnerable to counter-attacks. Items have varying durability, meaning high-impact weapons like axes will eventually ruin and become ineffective.
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Equip your chosen melee weapon into your hands by dragging it from your inventory or using the hotbar.
- Hold the Right Mouse Button to raise your weapon into a defensive/aiming stance.
- Tap the Left Mouse Button for a standard light attack, or hold the Left Mouse Button for a heavy, stamina-draining strike.
- Press the movement keys (WASD) while holding Right Mouse Button to sidestep or circle your target.
- Monitor the white stamina bar at the bottom of the screen to ensure you have enough energy to finish the engagement or escape.
- If the weapon becomes "Damaged" or "Badly Damaged," find a Whetstone in industrial areas to repair its health.
Tips
- Always aim for the head; a heavy strike to an infected's skull typically results in a one-hit knockout or kill.
- Keep a Whetstone in your inventory at all times to maintain the sharpness of blades and axes to prevent weapon loss.
- Avoid sprinting into melee combat, as an empty stamina bar prevents you from blocking or performing heavy strikes.
- Use the Police Baton or Stun Baton to safely knock out players without killing them, which is useful for non-lethal interactions.
- If you find yourself cornered by multiple infected, prioritize movement over aggression to avoid taking back-to-back hits.
Common Mistakes
- Spamming heavy attacks against multiple zombies, which drains stamina quickly and leaves you unable to defend yourself.
- Forgetting to repair weapons; a weapon that turns "Ruined" will disappear from your hands during a fight.
- Engaging armored players with low-tier melee weapons like a screwdriver or kitchen knife, which lack the reach and damage to win.
- Ignoring the block mechanic; blocking reduces incoming damage significantly, even against melee-wielding infected.
