Overview

Melee combat is your primary defense against infected and hostile players during the early game and when silent takedowns are required. Mastering stamina management and directional strikes is essential to prevent being overwhelmed by swarms or caught off-guard in close quarters.

How It Works

DayZ melee combat relies on a stamina-based system where every heavy attack consumes stamina, reducing your ability to run or block. You engage targets by raising your weapon (Right-click or LT), choosing a stance, and delivering either light attacks (Left-click or RT) or heavy attacks (Hold Shift + Left-click or Hold LB + RT). Weapons have varying stats for health damage, shock damage (which leads to unconsciousness), and armor penetration. Successfully landing headshots deals significantly more shock damage to both infected and players.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Equip your melee weapon and hold Right-click to enter combat stance.
  2. Monitor your stamina bar; if it is depleted, you cannot perform heavy attacks or effectively block.
  3. Use the movement keys (WASD or Left Stick) to strafe around the target to avoid their frontal reach.
  4. Time your heavy attack to land on the target’s head to maximize shock damage and potentially stun them.
  5. If facing multiple infected, backpedal while aiming to keep them in front of you, preventing them from flanking.
  6. Once the target falls, press the interaction key to initiate a "finishing move" or use heavy strikes to ensure they do not regain consciousness.

Tips

  • Always aim for the head; a direct hit with a high-shock weapon like a Policebaton can knock out an infected in one or two strikes.
  • If you run out of stamina, walk backward to regenerate it; do not attempt to sprint while encumbered during combat.
  • Use the block function (Hold Right-click + Move backwards) to mitigate damage from infected slashes, which preserves your clothing durability.
  • Conserve stamina by mixing light attacks with heavy attacks; only use heavy attacks to finish off a stunned target.
  • Manage your clothing condition; damaged gear reduces your effective armor, making melee exchanges against players much riskier.

Common Mistakes

  • Spamming heavy attacks until stamina reaches zero, leaving you unable to move or defend against a counter-attack.
  • Ignoring the reach of your weapon; using a short weapon like a screwdriver forces you into dangerous proximity compared to a long-reach tool.
  • Attempting to engage more than three infected at once in open ground; always use doorways or windows to bottleneck them into single-file access.
  • Forgetting to repair your weapon with a Whetstone; a ruined melee weapon deals significantly less damage and may break mid-fight.
