Overview

Suppressors are essential tactical attachments that reduce the audible report of your firearm and eliminate muzzle flash. In DayZ, using one allows you to neutralize infected or hostile players without immediately alerting nearby threats to your precise location.

How It Works

A suppressor modifies the sound signature of a weapon by dampening the explosion of propellant gases exiting the barrel. To use one, the suppressor must be in your inventory or hands. Drag the suppressor onto the weapon slot while in the inventory screen, or hold the item and press the "Attach" prompt. Note that each shot fired with a suppressor equipped degrades its "Health" status, eventually leading to ruin and total loss of function.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Locate a compatible suppressor for your specific weapon caliber (e.g., Pistol Suppressor for 9mm, NATO Suppressor for 5.56x45).
  2. Open your inventory screen by pressing "Tab".
  3. Drag the suppressor icon onto the corresponding attachment slot of your firearm.
  4. Ensure the suppressor is not "Ruined"; check the condition in the inventory UI to verify it is at least "Worn" or "Damaged".
  5. Fire the weapon normally; the sound will be significantly quieter and the muzzle flash will be suppressed.
  6. Periodically check the item's condition in your inventory, as high shot counts will degrade the durability until it requires a Repair Kit.

Tips

  • Always prioritize finding a Suppressor for your primary weapon if you intend to travel through high-traffic military zones like Tisy or NWAF.
  • Use a Sewing Kit or Leather Sewing Kit to repair damaged suppressors, but note that they cannot be repaired if they reach the "Ruined" state.
  • Suppressors increase the length of your weapon; be mindful of this in tight corners, as your barrel may clip through walls and reveal your position.
  • If you lack a formal suppressor, improvised suppressors can be crafted using a Water Bottle and Duct Tape, though they have extremely low durability.
  • Subsonic ammo is not required for suppression, but using it in conjunction with a suppressor further reduces the acoustic signature of your shots.

Common Mistakes

  • Firing too many rounds in quick succession without checking the suppressor's condition, causing it to ruin unexpectedly during a fight.
  • Assuming a suppressor makes a weapon "silent"; it only reduces sound, meaning players within 50-100 meters can still hear the mechanical cycling of the action.
  • Attempting to attach a suppressor that does not match the caliber of the firearm, such as trying to force a 5.56 suppressor onto a 7.62x39 weapon.
  • Forgetting that the suppressor is an item that can be damaged by incoming gunfire; a ruined suppressor will negatively affect weapon accuracy.
