Combat — Rifles
A complete guide to Rifles in DayZ Combat.
Overview
Rifles are the primary tools for medium-to-long-range engagements in DayZ, providing the highest accuracy and stopping power against both infected and survivors. Mastering these weapons is essential for controlling your engagement distance and securing high-tier loot in contested zones like NWAF or Tisy.
How It Works
Rifles in DayZ utilize a bolt-action, lever-action, or semi-automatic cycle to chamber rounds. You must possess the appropriate caliber ammunition and a compatible magazine; if a magazine is unavailable, you can load individual rounds directly into the internal magazine via the action bar or inventory screen. Aiming is determined by your stance and weapon sway, which is heavily influenced by your stamina bar and the presence of a weapon optic or iron sights.
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Drag the correct ammunition into your inventory and combine it with the magazine to fill it.
- Place the loaded magazine into your hotbar and press the corresponding key to attach it to the rifle.
- If no magazine is available, hold the rifle in your hands and drag individual rounds onto the weapon icon to internal-load it.
- Use the "R" key to chamber a round from the magazine into the weapon's firing chamber.
- Aim using the right-click button; hold "Shift" to steady your breathing and reduce weapon sway.
- Press the left-click button to fire, then press "R" again to cycle the bolt and eject the spent casing.
Tips
- Always keep your weapon cleaned with a Weapon Cleaning Kit to prevent jams during critical firefights.
- When sniping, calculate bullet drop by using the zeroing function (Page Up/Page Down keys) to adjust for distance.
- Use a suppressor to minimize the sound profile and prevent muzzle flash, which reveals your position to other players.
- If caught in a close-quarters situation, swap to a sidearm or secondary weapon rather than trying to clear a jam under pressure.
- Always check the "damaged" status of your weapon; a badly damaged rifle is significantly less accurate and prone to malfunction.
Common Mistakes
- Forgetting to chamber a round after reloading, which leads to an empty click during an ambush.
- Engaging targets without zeroing the scope for the appropriate distance, causing shots to impact below the target.
- Carrying multiple rifles at the cost of high stamina, which increases weapon sway and makes long-range precision impossible.
- Not verifying the specific caliber of the rifle; trying to load .308 into a Winchester chambered for .270 Win will cause a failure to load.
