Advanced — Hunting Efficiency
A complete guide to Hunting Efficiency in DayZ Advanced.
Overview
Hunting in DayZ is the most reliable method for obtaining high-calorie food and animal fat for long-term survival. Mastering animal behavior and tracking mechanics allows you to sustain yourself indefinitely without relying on scavenging residential loot.
How It Works
Animal spawns function on a logic of "hunting zones" scattered across the map; when a player enters a zone, the game spawns a small herd. Animals use a detection radius based on your sound (footsteps, gear rattling) and your scent (wind direction). Once a kill is confirmed, you must use a sharp tool—typically a Knife—to perform the "skinning" action. You then collect the meat and fat into your inventory, which must be cooked to avoid food poisoning.
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Equip a firearm with a high-caliber round (e.g., .308 Winchester or 7.62x54mm) for one-shot kills, or a hunting bow.
- Locate animal spawns in forests or meadows; use the iZurvive map to identify known hunting zones in your current sector.
- Observe the wind direction (check your smoke if you have a lit fire, or simply note that animals detect scent downwind); approach the herd from upwind.
- Crouch and move slowly to keep your noise indicator low; if the animals flee, wait in total silence for several minutes, as they often return to their spawn origin.
- Aim for the head or the upper chest to ensure a clean kill; wounding an animal without killing it causes it to flee over a long distance.
- Once the animal drops, approach the carcass with a Knife or Machete equipped in your hands.
- Look at the carcass and hold the "Skin" action prompt until the meat and fat drop to the ground.
- Pick up the meat and fat before it spoils or attracts nearby predators/players.
Tips
- Always prioritize harvesting animal fat; it is the most calorie-dense food source and can be used to cook other meat without needing oil.
- Use a suppressed weapon to hunt; gunshots in DayZ are audible for over 2km and will attract unwanted player attention.
- If you lack a knife, you can skin animals with a Hacksaw, Hatchet, or even a screwdriver, though these may have lower efficiency or durability.
- Animals have set patrol paths; identify these paths to set up an ambush rather than chasing them through the woods.
- Use a Hunter Scope on a repeating rifle like the Winchester 70 to pick off targets from 200+ meters away, keeping you safely out of their detection range.
Common Mistakes
- Chasing a wounded animal; they run faster than players and will lead you into dangerous territory or away from your gear.
- Forgetting to wash hands before eating; skinning an animal results in bloody hands, which will cause a disease if you touch food or eat without disinfecting first.
- Ignoring the wind direction; approaching from downwind causes animals to run before you even enter effective firing range.
- Leaving animal remains in the open; the carcass persists for a time, signaling to other players that a hunter is active in the area.
