Advanced — Building Optimization
A complete guide to Building Optimization in DayZ Advanced.
Overview
Building optimization focuses on minimizing the surface area of your base while maximizing structural integrity and storage efficiency. By utilizing vanilla geometry and collision mechanics, you can create fortified chokepoints that force raiders to burn through excess supplies to reach your loot.
How It Works
DayZ building uses a hierarchical structure where walls and gates are built upon fence kits. Optimization involves "base stacking" or layering—placing multiple gate frames within the same coordinate space—to multiply the number of hacksaws or grenades required to breach a single entry point. You must manage "territory" by placing a Flag Pole to prevent wall despawning through decay and to reset the lifetime of your base structures.
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Clear a flat area inside a shed or barn to utilize existing walls as natural boundaries.
- Deploy a Fence Kit and use a Shovel or Hoe to create the base.
- Attach logs to the frame and use a Hatchet or Hammer to build the bottom and top base segments.
- Attach a Metal Wire to the frame and use Pliers to turn it into a gate.
- Place a second Fence Kit as close to the first gate as possible, ideally overlapping, to force multiple breaching efforts.
- Install a Combination Lock on each gate to ensure individual layer security.
- Construct a Flag Pole in the center of your building perimeter using a Flag Kit, Wood Logs, and rope.
- Raise the flag fully to reset the decay timer on all connected wall sections.
Tips
- Always build gates in sets of three; this forces raiders to use at least 12 grenades to reach the interior.
- Place your base in locations with limited line-of-sight, such as dense forests near Gorka or inland valley depressions, to avoid being spotted by snipers.
- Use crates or barrels to block off secondary entrances that are not being used as main gates to save on building materials.
- Orient your gate hinges so they open away from the direction of the expected attacker to prevent them from slipping through gaps.
- Keep a Hammer or Hatchet in your inventory at all times to repair walls damaged by environment or player action before they reach a ruined state.
Common Mistakes
- Building on a main road or near high-traffic water pumps, which makes discovery inevitable.
- Failing to raise the Flag Pole, causing walls to despawn within 7-14 days due to lack of maintenance.
- Using wooden walls exclusively without Metal Plates; sheet metal provides significantly higher protection against base-raiding tools.
- Leaving gaps between gate frames that allow players to crouch or prone through the edges of the collision box.
