Advanced — Inventory Optimization
A complete guide to Inventory Optimization in DayZ Advanced.
Overview
Inventory optimization is the strategic management of your 90-slot character capacity and container volumes to maximize survival endurance. Proper organization ensures you can carry critical medical, combat, and logistical supplies without compromising your ability to loot or maneuver efficiently.
How It Works
DayZ utilizes a volumetric slot system where items possess different shapes and size requirements. You manage this through your inventory screen (Tab on PC, menu on consoles) by dragging items into slots within your clothing, vests, and backpacks. Items like magazines and medical supplies often have specific dimensions; for example, a combat knife takes up a 1x3 vertical slot, while a box of 308 rounds is a 1x2 block. Efficiency is achieved by nesting smaller items inside protective containers like Cooking Pots or Drybags and utilizing specialized gear slots like the holster or melee weapon slot.
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Equip a high-capacity vest, such as the Plate Carrier with pouches, to keep primary combat items accessible and protected.
- Utilize "containers within containers" by placing small, loose items like batteries, sewing kits, or loose rounds into a Cooking Pot or Protective Case to save grid space.
- Keep your primary weapon in the shoulder slot and your secondary/sidearm in the holster to reserve your main inventory grid for loot.
- Arrange your hotbar (1-0 keys) with mission-critical items: a bandage on 1, a combat knife on 2, and food/water on the remaining slots to prevent opening the menu during combat.
- Sort items by weight: keep heavier items like ammunition and food closer to the center of your inventory to maintain better stamina management.
- Drop low-tier items like single cans of food in favor of high-calorie, low-weight alternatives like dry rice or powdered milk.
Tips
- Always carry a sewing kit or leather sewing kit to repair your clothes, as damaged items lose storage slots.
- Use a cooking pot as a storage vessel; it holds 12 slots but only occupies 6 slots in your bag.
- Keep your most vital medical supplies, such as Epinephrine and Morphine, inside a protective case to ensure they remain functional even if you are shot.
- Prioritize stamina by shedding unnecessary cosmetic gear or heavy, low-utility melee weapons like the sledgehammer.
- Use the quick-access slots for items that are too large to fit in your pockets but needed in an emergency, like an extra magazine.
Common Mistakes
- Keeping multiple half-empty magazines in your inventory; consolidate ammo by dragging rounds from one stack to another to free up space.
- Carrying unnecessary "clutter" items like multiple flashlights or non-essential tools like the wrench when you don't have a base.
- Ignoring the condition of your backpack; a badly damaged bag will eventually ruin its contents if you take too much physical trauma.
- Failing to empty containers before dropping them, which leads to losing valuable supplies if you discard the container.
