Advanced — Stamina
A complete guide to Stamina in DayZ Advanced.
Overview
Stamina in DayZ determines your ability to sprint, jump, vault, and hold your breath while aiming. Managing your weight is the most critical factor in ensuring you remain mobile enough to escape combat or reach cover during an emergency.
How It Works
Your stamina bar is tied directly to your total carried weight. As your inventory load increases, your maximum stamina pool decreases, causing the stamina bar to "cap out" at a lower level. Moving while encumbered drains the bar faster, and reaching zero stamina prevents sprinting, vaulting, and steadying your weapon. The weight is calculated based on the combined mass of your equipped clothing, gear in your inventory, and weapons held in your hands or on your back.
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Press the 'I' key to open your inventory and hover over individual items to see their weight in kg.
- Drop unnecessary heavy items such as excess ammo boxes, multiple melee weapons, or heavy base-building tools.
- Remove heavy backpacks like the Field Backpack or Mountain Backpack if you are not looting, as they are massive weight penalties.
- Shift your primary weapon to your hands rather than your back to slightly reduce the weight penalty on your stamina bar.
- Eat and drink until your status icons are full to ensure passive stamina regeneration remains at its peak rate.
- Drop your backpack completely during high-stakes PvP encounters to instantly regain maximum stamina and sprint speed.
Tips
- Prioritize lightweight clothing like Combat Jackets or Hiking Jackets over heavy Plate Carriers if you need to travel long distances quickly.
- Carrying two primary weapons significantly reduces your stamina cap; stick to one rifle and a sidearm to keep your bar at near-full capacity.
- Stamina regeneration is faster when walking or standing still; stop moving to recover your bar quickly before a sprint.
- Keep your gear in your pants and shirt slots rather than your backpack; the game calculates the total weight regardless, but dropping a bag is faster than inventory shuffling.
- Use a lightweight chest holster for your pistol to save slots and reduce total weight compared to bulky tactical holsters.
Common Mistakes
- Hoarding construction materials or excessive building nails when traveling long distances, which leaves you defenseless in an ambush.
- Carrying multiple full magazines for weapons you aren't currently using; store extra ammo in a stash instead of your kit.
- Ignoring the weight of the backpack itself; some bags weigh several kilograms even when empty.
- Sprinting constantly until the bar hits zero; always leave a sliver of stamina available for an emergency vault or tactical retreat.
