Overview

Vehicles in DayZ are essential assets for rapid transportation, gear storage, and mobile base defense. Mastering vehicle maintenance is critical because even a fully repaired car is useless without the correct fluid levels and battery health.

How It Works

Vehicles operate using an internal combustion system that requires three primary components to function: a Car Battery, a Spark Plug, and the correct fluid levels (Radiator water, Fuel). Each vehicle has a specific slot for these parts; if any are missing or ruined, the engine will fail to start. You must manually inspect the radiator, fuel tank, and battery levels using the interaction menu while standing near the hood or the designated fill points. Controls involve pressing 'W' to accelerate, 'S' to brake/reverse, and using the mouse or 'A/D' to steer.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Locate a vehicle shell and inspect its condition; ensure the frame is not "ruined."
  2. Open the hood by holding the interaction button while looking at the engine bay.
  3. Drag a functional Spark Plug into the engine slot.
  4. Drag a charged Car Battery into the battery slot.
  5. Approach the radiator (usually under the hood) and fill it with water using a Bottle, Canteen, or Cooking Pot until the "fill" prompt disappears.
  6. Approach the fuel intake (rear or side of the vehicle) and pour Gasoline from a Jerrycan into the tank.
  7. Enter the driver’s seat, hold the interaction button to start the engine, and engage the parking brake before shifting into gear.

Tips

  • Always carry a Tire Repair Kit, as a single blown tire can render a vehicle undrivable in rough terrain.
  • Keep a Spark Plug and a spare Battery in your inventory, as these are the most common items stolen by other players to immobilize your vehicle.
  • Avoid driving at high speeds through forests; collision damage is high, and a radiator leak caused by a tree impact will overheat and destroy the engine in seconds.
  • Use the vehicle's internal inventory slots to store extra Jerrycans and clean rags for long-distance travel.
  • Keep the engine off when stationary to prevent unnecessary fuel consumption and noise that alerts nearby players.

Common Mistakes

  • Filling the radiator with Gasoline instead of Water, which causes immediate engine failure.
  • Leaving the engine running while looting a building, making the vehicle an easy target for theft.
  • Driving with low-quality or damaged tires, which leads to poor traction and increased risk of flipping.
  • Forgetting to check the coolant level, causing the engine to "smoke" and eventually seize due to overheating.
