Beginner — Base Building
A complete guide to Base Building in DayZ Beginner.
Overview
Base building in DayZ is the process of creating a secure, persistent structure to store loot and establish a home base. It is essential for mid-to-late game progression, allowing you to stockpile resources that would otherwise be lost upon death.
How It Works
Base building relies on the construction kit mechanic. You begin by crafting a Fence Kit using two Wooden Sticks and one Rope. Once placed, you use a Hammer or Hatchet to attach Wooden Planks and Metal Sheets to a frame. You must then use a Combination Lock (3-dial or 4-dial) to secure your gates, preventing unauthorized players from entering. Structures are persistent in the game world, provided they are maintained with a Flag Pole to prevent despawning.
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Craft a Fence Kit using 1 Rope and 2 Wooden Sticks, then place the blueprint on flat ground.
- Build the frame by attaching 2 Wooden Logs to the kit and using a Shovel or Hoe to dig post holes.
- Attach Wooden Planks to the frame using a Hammer or Hatchet and Nails to build the lower and upper sections.
- Convert a section into a Gate by attaching a Fence Kit to the completed fence frame and using Pliers to install Wire.
- Attach a Combination Lock to the Gate gate frame to secure it.
- Build a Watchtower Kit if you need height for sniping or increased storage capacity.
- Place a Flag Pole in the center of your base area and raise the flag to reset the decay timer for all attached structures.
Tips
- Always prioritize building a Watchtower first, as it provides a vantage point to defend your base while you work.
- Use a 4-dial Combination Lock instead of a 3-dial; it takes significantly longer for raiders to brute-force the code.
- Build in remote forest areas or dense treelines to avoid detection by passing scavengers.
- Keep a surplus of Nails and Wooden Planks inside your base at all times to facilitate quick repairs after raids.
- Never place your base inside existing buildings, as these are "high-traffic" zones that players check by default.
Common Mistakes
- Building on a road or path; this makes you highly visible and attracts unwanted attention from roaming squads.
- Forgetting to raise the flag on your Flag Pole; your base will despawn and vanish after 45 days of inactivity.
- Leaving base tools (Hammer, Hatchet, Pliers) inside the base, which allows raiders to dismantle your walls from the inside.
- Creating a single-gate entrance; always build an "airlock" (two gates in a row) so you are protected while opening the base.
