Overview

Finding weapons is the most critical step in transitioning from a vulnerable fresh spawn to a capable survivor. Securing a firearm or melee tool is your primary defense against infected and hostile players in the unforgiving environment of Chernarus or Livonia.

How It Works

DayZ utilizes a tiered loot economy where specific items spawn in categorized structures. Weapons spawn as "loose" items in the world or inside container objects like lockers, crates, and car wrecks. To equip a weapon, drag it into your hands (or press your hotkey) and ensure the weapon is loaded by placing a compatible magazine into the internal slot or manually chambering individual rounds. Always check weapon condition via the inventory icon; ruined items are non-functional.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Check residential houses and sheds for basic melee tools like crowbars, lead pipes, or kitchen knives to defend against infected.
  2. Locate police stations, hunting stands, and intake buildings for civilian-grade firearms like the IJ-70, B95, or CR-527.
  3. Search military checkpoints, barracks, and tents for high-tier weaponry like the M4-A1, AK-74, or LAR.
  4. Open all lockers, wooden crates, and vehicle wrecks found within military zones, as these often contain weapon attachments or hidden firearms.
  5. Combine a compatible magazine with a weapon by opening your inventory, dragging the mag onto the weapon, or holding the weapon and holding the R key to reload.
  6. Press the "up" arrow on the D-pad (consoles) or your assigned hotkey (PC) to move the weapon from your backpack to your hands.

Tips

  • Always check the "Quick Bar" after picking up a weapon to ensure it is hotkeyed for instant access during a surprise encounter.
  • Prioritize finding a suppressor or improvised bottle suppressor early; noise discipline is the single most effective way to survive encounters with infected.
  • Keep your weapon in "Pristine" or "Worn" condition; if the icon turns yellow (Damaged) or red (Badly Damaged), it is prone to jamming during combat.
  • Use the "inspect" feature in your inventory to check if a firearm has a chambered round, as a magazine might be empty even if it appears loaded.
  • Visit hunting stands in forested areas to find mid-tier rifles like the Blaze or Mosin 910; these are quieter and less contested than military bases.

Common Mistakes

  • Engaging large groups of infected with a firearm before having a backup weapon or sufficient ammunition, resulting in wasted shots and unwanted noise.
  • Ignoring melee weapons once a firearm is found; always keep a combat knife or hatchet for silent infected kills to save precious ammunition.
  • Forgetting to "chamber" a round after inserting a fresh magazine, which leaves you with an empty weapon when you first pull the trigger.
  • Assuming a weapon is "empty" because the magazine is; check the chamber manually if you are in a high-stress situation.
