Overview

Water is your most critical survival resource in DayZ; without it, you will succumb to dehydration within minutes of high-intensity activity. Mastering the hydration cycle is the primary barrier between a fresh spawn and a long-term survivor.

How It Works

Hydration is represented by the water drop icon in your HUD. When this icon is white, you are hydrated; when it turns yellow or red, you are entering dehydration. You consume water by holding a filled container or standing at a water source and holding the left mouse button (on PC) or the assigned action button (on console). You can consume water from wells, ponds, streams, and containers.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Locate a water source; prioritize town wells, as they contain safe, drinkable water.
  2. Equip your empty water container (bottle, canteen, pot) in your hands.
  3. Approach the well, look at the pump handle, and select the "Drink" or "Fill" prompt.
  4. If drinking directly from a well, hold the action button until your character finishes the animation and the water icon stops flashing.
  5. If filling, wait for the progress bar to complete; your container is now ready for use on the go.
  6. If using a natural source like a pond, you must treat the water with Chlorine Tablets before drinking to avoid cholera.

Tips

  • Always prioritize town wells over ponds or rivers; well water is guaranteed to be clean and cholera-free.
  • If you find a Plastic Bottle, save it; it is lighter than a canteen and can be refilled indefinitely at any well.
  • When drinking from a well, stop once the water icon turns white to prevent vomiting from over-hydration.
  • Carry a Cooking Pot if possible; it holds more water than a canteen and can be used to boil water over a fire if you are forced to use a lake.
  • You can fill multiple containers at a single well by cycling through them in your hands.

Common Mistakes

  • Drinking directly from ponds or streams without purification tablets, which leads to cholera and rapid fluid loss.
  • Waiting until the hydration icon is red before looking for water, which causes your health to drain once you begin to dehydrate.
  • Washing bloody hands in a water container instead of a well, which contaminates the water inside.
  • Ignoring the "Sick" status icon after drinking; always treat your water if you have any doubt about the source.
