Beginner — Finding Food
A complete guide to Finding Food in DayZ Beginner.
Overview
Food management is the most critical hurdle for a fresh spawn in DayZ. Without a consistent calorie intake, your health will decline, eventually leading to starvation and death.
How It Works
The DayZ survival system tracks your Energy (calories) and Hydration. When your energy bar depletes, your character begins burning health. You acquire energy by consuming food found in civilian, industrial, or military loot spawns, or by hunting and foraging. Food items vary by caloric density and weight; always prioritize high-calorie items like fats or canned goods.
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Scavenge residential houses, specifically checking kitchens and tables for canned food.
- Search for fruit trees in orchards or near village outskirts; check the ground underneath for spawned fruit.
- Locate a knife or sharp tool, then hunt a chicken or animal.
- Use your blade to "Skin and Quarter" the animal carcass to obtain meat.
- Find a heat source, such as a fireplace or gas stove, to cook the meat thoroughly.
- Consume your cooked meat while monitoring your energy icon to avoid stomach sickness.
Tips
- Always check the ground beneath fruit trees, as fresh fruit spawns there periodically.
- Use a knife to open "damaged" or "badly damaged" cans, but expect to lose some food content during the process.
- Cooked animal fat is the most calorie-dense item in the game; keep it in your inventory for emergencies.
- Avoid eating raw meat, as it carries a high risk of salmonella, which will cause vomiting and rapid hydration loss.
- Wash your hands at a water pump or with alcohol tincture after skinning an animal if you are not wearing gloves.
Common Mistakes
- Eating with bloody hands, which leads to disease and involuntary vomiting.
- Consuming food items found on dead players or zombies without checking for quality.
- Over-eating until the stomach icon appears, which causes you to vomit and waste precious calories.
- Ignoring the "hunger" status effect until it turns red, as your health will begin to drain immediately thereafter.
