Loot Locations — Gas Zones
A complete guide to Gas Zones in DayZ Loot Locations.
Overview
Gas Zones are high-risk, high-reward contaminated areas that house the best military-grade weaponry and tactical gear in DayZ. You cannot enter these zones without specialized CBRN protective equipment, as exposure leads to rapid health depletion and death.
How It Works
Gas Zones are divided into permanent zones (Rify and Pavlovo Military Base) and dynamic artillery zones that shift randomly across the map. The gas causes "Chemical Poisoning," a status effect that drains health rapidly until the player is cured or dies. To survive, you must wear a full set of NBC gear (Jacket, Pants, Boots, Hood, Gloves) and a Gas Mask with an attached Gas Filter. You must monitor the condition of your filter, as it depletes over time and will eventually stop protecting you from the toxic atmosphere.
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Collect a complete set of NBC protective gear (Jacket, Pants, Boots, Gloves, Hood) and a Gas Mask.
- Ensure you have at least two spare Gas Filters, as they degrade while in the zone.
- Approach the edge of the zone and equip all NBC gear items to your character.
- Attach a fresh Gas Filter to your Gas Mask and equip it to your face.
- Enter the zone and quickly loot the high-tier spawns, such as barracks, cargo containers, or the ship hull at Rify.
- Check your Gas Mask's durability and the Filter's status frequently in your inventory menu.
- If your health begins to drop or the mask loses durability, immediately exit the zone to safe territory.
- Once outside the gas, remove your mask, stow your gear, and allow your immune system to recover.
Tips
- Always prioritize finding a Pox Antidote; it is the only way to recover from the early stages of chemical poisoning if your mask fails.
- Keep your NBC gear repaired with Sewing Kits or Leather Repair Kits, as damaged gear offers zero protection against the gas.
- Rify is a water-based zone; bring a reliable long-range rifle to deal with infected or rival players from a distance before entering.
- Looting the ship at Rify is best done at night or during low-pop hours to avoid snipers camping the coastline.
- Carry a blood bag or saline bag to rapidly restore health if you take damage while inside the zone.
Common Mistakes
- Entering the zone with damaged NBC clothing; if any piece of gear is "Ruined," the gas will bypass your protection and kill you.
- Forgetting to swap your Gas Filter; if the filter reaches 0%, you will immediately start taking toxic damage.
- Underestimating the infected; gas-zone infected are stronger than regular zombies and can easily break your Gas Mask if they strike your face.
- Running out of stamina while trying to escape the zone; always maintain a reserve of stamina for sprinting out if you get compromised.
