Overview

Vehicles in DayZ are essential for rapid transport and high-capacity storage, but they require specific mechanical parts to become operational. Maintaining your vehicle with these components is the difference between a mobile base and a static wreck left for scavengers.

How It Works

To make a vehicle functional, you must satisfy its engine requirements: a Battery, a Spark Plug, and fuel. Every vehicle also requires its specific wheels to move. You must look at the vehicle’s wreck or body, open your inventory, and drag parts into the corresponding slots in the "Car Parts" tab. Use a Lug Wrench for wheels and a Spark Plug/Battery for the engine bay. To refuel, hold a Jerry Can or Water Bottle in your hands and interact with the fuel cap.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Locate a vehicle body and identify missing components by checking the inventory screen.
  2. Search industrial areas, garages, and sheds for vehicle-specific parts like a Spark Plug or Battery.
  3. Equip the Lug Wrench in your hands to attach or remove wheels from the wheel hubs.
  4. Open the hood or engine compartment to slot the Battery and Spark Plug into their respective slots.
  5. Fill the vehicle's fuel tank by holding a container of gasoline and selecting the "Refuel" prompt near the tank cap.
  6. Enter the driver’s seat, hold the ignition key (default 'W'), and ensure the engine starts before putting the vehicle in gear.

Tips

  • Always check the status of a part; a "Ruined" part will not function and must be replaced.
  • Carry a pipe wrench in your inventory to repair the engine block if it starts smoking after a collision.
  • Use a screwdriver or pliers when removing specific electronic parts if the vehicle is immobilized.
  • Park your vehicle in dense woods or inside existing structures to hide it from passing survivors.
  • Keep a spare Battery in your trunk, as dead batteries are a common cause of stranded vehicles.

Common Mistakes

  • Attempting to use the wrong wheel type; ensure you have the specific variant for your chassis (e.g., Van 01 Wheel).
  • Ignoring the fuel gauge; running out of gas in dangerous territory often leads to player death.
  • Forgetting to lock the doors if your vehicle supports it, allowing others to steal parts or items.
  • Driving too fast on uneven terrain, which causes physics glitches and potential vehicle destruction.
