Vehicles — Fuel
A complete guide to Fuel in DayZ Vehicles.
Overview
Fuel management is the cornerstone of vehicle utility in DayZ, as engines require constant replenishment to prevent stranding in dangerous territory. Running out of gas turns your primary transport into a stationary target, making fuel logistics essential for group operations and long-distance travel.
How It Works
Vehicles possess a hidden fuel tank capacity, which can be filled using Gasoline Canisters or by interacting directly with fuel pumps at service stations. To refuel, you must have a container or a pump nozzle near the vehicle’s fill point, usually located on the rear quarter panel or near the rear wheel arches. You interact with the fuel tank by holding the primary action key (F by default) while aiming at the fill point or the pump nozzle.
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Locate a functioning fuel pump at a service station or prepare a full Gasoline Canister.
- Park the vehicle within two meters of the fuel pump or hold your filled Gasoline Canister in your hands.
- Aim at the vehicle's fuel intake point (often highlighted by a prompt when you are in range).
- If using a pump, click the left mouse button to initiate the flow of fuel.
- If using a canister, scroll through your radial menu or hold the action key to select "Pour."
- Monitor the fuel gauge on the vehicle dashboard; stop pouring or disconnect the pump once the needle reaches the full position.
Tips
- Always keep a spare Gasoline Canister in your trunk for emergencies when traveling through low-density areas.
- Fuel pumps at service stations require power; if the power is off, you must use a generator or manual canisters.
- You can siphon fuel from abandoned vehicles using an empty bottle or canister to top off your own tank.
- Park facing toward the fuel pump exit to ensure a quick escape if you are ambushed while refueling.
- Gasoline Canisters can be filled at any water pump or stream if you empty them first, but always verify the liquid type before pouring it into your tank.
Common Mistakes
- Leaving the engine running while refueling; always turn the ignition off to ensure the fuel registers correctly in the tank.
- Assuming all canisters are full; always check the contents of a found canister before venturing into the wilderness.
- Parking too far from the fuel pump; if the prompt does not appear, nudge the vehicle closer until the interaction becomes available.
- Ignoring the "Fuel" warning light on the dashboard until the engine cuts out.
