Vehicles — Seats
A complete guide to Seats in DayZ Vehicles.
Overview
Seats in DayZ define your role and vulnerability within a vehicle, determining who operates the engine and who is exposed to incoming fire. Managing seating is essential for tactical maneuvering, troop transport, and protecting valuable gear stored in vehicle inventories.
How It Works
Vehicles consist of a driver seat, a front passenger seat, and various rear or side seats depending on the model (e.g., Ada 4x4, Olga 24, or the Van 01). When approaching a vehicle, the game provides a context-sensitive prompt to "Enter" specific seats. Once inside, your character occupies a hitbox that limits your interaction with the world; while seated, you can access your personal inventory, perform specific gestures, or utilize sidearms, but you cannot utilize large two-handed primary weapons effectively unless the vehicle layout permits it.
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Approach the door corresponding to the specific seat you intend to occupy.
- Ensure your hands are empty; if you are holding a large item, you cannot enter.
- Observe the prompt in the top-left corner of the HUD that indicates "Enter [Vehicle Name] (Driver/Passenger/Rear)."
- Press the interact key (default 'F') to board the vehicle.
- Use the seat-switching keys (default 'F' or individual seat keybinds if configured) to move between available interior positions if the vehicle is not in motion.
- Press the 'F' key to exit the vehicle when it has come to a complete stop.
Tips
- Always check the vehicle's interior health status before committing to a long trip, as damaged seats can sometimes glitch player hitboxes.
- If you are being fired upon, use the seat-switching mechanic to move to the side of the vehicle opposite the threat to minimize your exposure.
- Keep a secondary weapon or a high-capacity pistol in your quick-bar, as you cannot shoulder a rifle while sitting in most vehicle seats.
- When transporting teammates, ensure everyone enters before the driver, as boarding the driver seat initiates the engine state and can lead to accidental run-overs.
Common Mistakes
- Attempting to board a vehicle while holding a large backpack or primary weapon in your hands, which causes the "Enter" prompt to disappear.
- Exiting a vehicle while it is still rolling, which results in significant shock damage or death.
- Ignoring the state of vehicle doors; if a door is missing, you are fully exposed to zombies and hostile players while seated.
- Forgetting to lock the vehicle doors if you step out to scout, allowing intruders to hijack the vehicle or sit in a passenger seat to ambush you.
