Hunting — Pelts
A complete guide to Pelts in DayZ Hunting.
Overview
Pelts are a critical resource harvested from hunted animals that serve as the primary material for crafting leather gear and specialized storage items. Converting animal hides into tanned leather is essential for long-term survival, as it allows for the creation of durable, waterproof clothing and high-capacity inventory solutions.
How It Works
When an animal is successfully killed, it must be skinned using a sharp cutting tool to obtain a pelt. These raw pelts are essentially useless until they are processed in a wooden barrel or leather tanning kit. By combining a raw pelt with garden lime, the pelt undergoes a tanning process, transforming into leather, which can then be used at a leather sewing kit to craft gear.
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Kill an animal, such as a deer, cow, or wild boar.
- Equip a sharp tool like a Hunting Knife, Combat Knife, or Kitchen Knife.
- Approach the carcass and select the "Skin and Quarter" prompt to harvest the pelt and meat.
- Locate a Wooden Barrel or craft a Leather Tanning Kit.
- Place the raw pelt inside the container.
- Add one full stack of Garden Lime to the container.
- Close the container and wait for the tanning process to finish; the item status will change from "Raw" to "Tanned Leather."
- Use a Leather Sewing Kit to craft the leather into desired items like the Leather Backpack, Leather Vest, or Leather Pouch.
Tips
- Always prioritize killing cows or deer, as they provide significantly larger, high-quality pelts compared to smaller game.
- Garden lime is the only catalyst that triggers the tanning process; keep a supply stored in your base specifically for this purpose.
- Tanned leather is highly durable and can be repaired using a Leather Sewing Kit if the condition begins to degrade.
- If you lack garden lime, you can often find it in sheds, greenhouses, or industrial areas; prioritize searching these spots early in your run.
Common Mistakes
- Attempting to use a blunt object like a screwdriver to skin an animal; this will result in lower-quality yield or failure to harvest the pelt.
- Forgetting to add garden lime to the barrel, which results in the pelt simply sitting in the container without ever becoming leather.
- Leaving pelts on the ground for too long, causing them to despawn before you have the chance to transport them to a barrel.
- Using a damaged Leather Sewing Kit; always ensure you have a pristine or worn kit to avoid wasting materials during the crafting process.
