Overview

Skinning is the essential process of harvesting meat, fat, and pelts from hunted wildlife in DayZ. Mastering this mechanic is the most reliable way to secure high-calorie food and craft essential gear, such as improvised backpacks or fireplace kits.

How It Works

To skin an animal, you must have a sharp cutting tool equipped in your hands and approach the carcass. Once you look at the body, a prompt will appear allowing you to hold the interact key to perform the action. The animal’s components—meat, fat, bones, and pelt—will be transferred to your inventory or dropped on the ground if your space is insufficient. You cannot skin animals with blunt objects; the tool must have a cutting edge.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Kill an animal and locate the carcass on the ground.
  2. Equip a sharp tool, such as a Combat Knife, Kitchen Knife, or Hunting Knife, into your hands.
  3. Aim your crosshair at the carcass until the "Skin and Quarter" prompt appears.
  4. Hold the interact key (F by default) until the progress bar completes.
  5. Open your inventory screen to move the harvested items from the animal’s storage slots into your clothing or backpack.
  6. Gather the bones and pelt from the ground or the carcass inventory if they do not auto-equip.

Tips

  • Always prioritize harvesting the animal fat, as it provides the highest calorie density and is the best fuel for cooking meat without burning it.
  • If you lack a knife, you can craft a Stone Knife by combining two Small Stones found on hiking trails or beaches.
  • Clean your hands with an Alcohol Tincture or Disinfectant Spray before eating, or wear gloves, to avoid contracting salmonella from bloody hands.
  • Use the bones you harvest to craft Improvised Fishing Hooks, which are essential for long-term food stability.
  • Skinning in the rain is fine, but remember that wet meat will eventually spoil faster if kept in your inventory; try to cook it immediately at a fire.

Common Mistakes

  • Attempting to skin an animal with a screwdriver or crowbar, which are blunt tools and will not trigger the prompt.
  • Forgetting to wash bloody hands before eating, leading to rapid health loss from disease.
  • Leaving the animal fat behind; it is the most valuable resource for fire-starting and high-calorie nutrition.
  • Running out of inventory space, which causes the meat to drop on the ground where it can be ruined or stolen by other players.
