Fishing — Hooks
A complete guide to Hooks in DayZ Fishing.
Overview
Fishing is one of the most reliable and efficient ways to acquire high-calorie food in DayZ without relying on high-risk hunting or looting. By crafting or finding hooks, you gain a sustainable food source that requires minimal equipment and keeps you fed during long-distance travel.
How It Works
The fishing mechanic requires a fishing rod (crafted or world-spawn), a fishing hook, and a bait (typically a worm). You combine the hook and bait, attach the setup to the rod, and cast it into any body of water—ponds, lakes, or the ocean. Once you feel a vibration or hear the splash of a bite, you reel the fish in to catch it.
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Find a Bone or a Knife to craft a hook, or loot a Fishing Hook from sheds or residential areas.
- If using a Bone, combine it with a Knife in your hands to craft a Bone Hook.
- Find a Garden Plot or use a Knife on dirt ground to "Dig for Worms" to obtain a Worm.
- Combine the Worm with your Fishing Hook to bait it.
- Combine the baited hook with a Fishing Rod (or an improvised rod made from a Long Wooden Stick and Rope).
- Equip the rod and approach the water bank until the "Fish" prompt appears.
- Hold the left mouse button (or relevant controller trigger) to cast the line.
- Wait for the rod to jerk or vibrate, then quickly press the action button to hook the fish.
- Hold the action button to reel the fish in until it is pulled onto the bank.
Tips
- Always keep a stack of Bones in your inventory; they are the most reliable way to craft hooks on the go if you have a knife.
- Fishing at night is perfectly viable and helps you avoid detection by other players in high-traffic coastal towns.
- Fish provide excellent calorie counts; prioritize catching Carp as they offer the most energy return per slot.
- You do not need to stand in the water to fish; standing on the edge of the bank is sufficient and prevents your clothes from getting wet and heavy.
- If you lack a rod, an improvised rod made from a Long Wooden Stick and Rope works exactly the same as a professional one.
Common Mistakes
- Trying to fish without baiting the hook; you must combine the worm with the hook before attaching it to the rod.
- Waiting too long after the bite; if you do not hit the action button immediately when the rod jerks, the fish will escape.
- Running out of stamina while reeling; ensure you are not exhausted when you start fishing so you can successfully land the catch.
- Forgetting to wash your hands after skinning the fish; always use clean water or alcohol tincture to avoid infection before eating.
