Overview

Farming in DayZ provides a renewable, calorie-dense food source that allows survivors to establish long-term bases without constant scavenging. Mastering agriculture is essential for mid-to-late game stability, reducing your reliance on high-risk looting runs for canned goods.

How It Works

Plants grow based on a hidden stage system accelerated by water and fertilizer. You create plots using a Hoe, Pickaxe, or Shovel to dig into dirt surfaces, plant seeds, and optionally use Garden Lime or Plant Material to increase yield. Crops track their own hydration levels, and you must harvest them before they wither or rot after reaching maturity.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Equip a Hoe, Shovel, or Pickaxe and interact with a dirt surface to create a Garden Plot.
  2. Locate a Worm by digging in the dirt with a Knife or Garden Hoe and combine it with your seeds to increase growth speed.
  3. Open the Garden Plot inventory and drag your chosen seeds (Pumpkin, Tomato, Pepper, Zucchini, or Potato) into the slots.
  4. Interact with the plot to plant the seeds.
  5. Use a Water Bottle, Canteen, or Waterpouch Natural to pour water onto the plot until the soil appears dark.
  6. Apply Garden Lime if available to maximize the number of vegetables produced.
  7. Monitor the plant’s growth; remove weeds with your bare hands if they appear to prevent them from sapping nutrients.
  8. Access the plot once the plant reaches the "mature" state to harvest the food.

Tips

  • Always check the status of your plants; if they turn brown or dry, they need more water to prevent them from dying.
  • Pumpkin patches provide the highest caloric intake per slot, making them the most efficient choice for long-term survival.
  • You can store extra seeds in a Waterproofbag Green or Waterproofbag Orange to keep them dry and organized in your inventory.
  • Carry a Garden Hoe at all times; it serves as a dual-purpose tool for digging plots and as a defensive weapon.

Common Mistakes

  • Planting in tall grass or concrete surfaces; farming only functions on exposed dirt patches.
  • Neglecting to water crops; unwatered plants grow significantly slower and often wither before providing a harvest.
  • Harvesting too late; if you wait too long after a plant reaches "mature" status, it will rot and become unusable.
  • Leaving plants unattended in high-traffic areas where other players can easily steal your harvest.
