Fishing — Rods
A complete guide to Rods in DayZ Fishing.
Overview
Fishing is one of the most reliable methods for obtaining calorie-dense food in DayZ, providing a consistent source of fat and meat without the danger of hunting predators. Using a fishing rod allows a survivor to harvest high-quality protein from any body of water, including ponds, streams, and the ocean.
How It Works
Fishing requires an assembled rod, a baited hook, and a body of water. You must equip the rod in your hands, attach a baited hook to it, and perform the "Fish" action while standing at the water's edge. The mechanic uses a simple interaction timer; once a fish bites, you must actively reel it in to pull it from the water before the line snaps.
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Craft an Improvised Fishing Rod by combining a Long Wooden Stick with Rope, or find a collapsible Fishing Rod in coastal industrial spawns.
- Combine a Hook (or a crafted Bone Hook) with a Worm to create a "Baited Hook."
- Attach the Baited Hook to your fishing rod.
- Equip the rod in your hands and approach the shore of a pond, lake, or the sea.
- Aim at the water and hold the Left Mouse Button (or trigger) to initiate the fishing animation.
- Wait for your character to pull the rod back; when you feel a bite (the rod tip moves), click the Left Mouse Button to hook the fish.
- Hold the Left Mouse Button to reel the fish in until it lands at your feet.
Tips
- Always check the status of your rod; if the line breaks, you will need to re-craft or repair the setup.
- Carp are common in inland ponds, while Mackerel are found exclusively in saltwater (ocean) locations.
- Keep your rod in a Waterproofbag if you are traveling in the rain to prevent it from deteriorating unnecessarily.
- If you run out of hooks, craft them by combining a Knife with a Bone; one bone provides two hooks.
- Fishing during the rain or at night can sometimes yield different catch rates, though location remains the primary factor.
Common Mistakes
- Trying to fish without bait: You must have a Worm attached to the hook, or the fish will not bite.
- Fishing in shallow puddles or non-interactive water: Ensure you are at a body of water that allows the "Fish" prompt to appear.
- Holding the reel button too long: If the line tension becomes too high, release the button momentarily to prevent the line from snapping.
- Ignoring stamina: Make sure you are not starving or exhausted before fishing, as the process takes time and you need to be prepared to skin your catch immediately.
