Medical — Bandaging
A complete guide to Bandaging in DayZ Medical.
Overview
Bandaging is the primary method for stopping blood loss caused by cuts in DayZ. Failing to address a bleeding status rapidly will result in blood loss leading to unconsciousness and eventual death.
How It Works
When you take damage from zombies, players, or environmental hazards, you may sustain cuts, indicated by a blood-drop icon and red vignette edges on your screen. To stop the bleeding, you must have a bandage, rag, or sewing kit in your hands or inventory. Using the item triggers a progress bar; once completed, the bleeding status is removed, though any lost blood will need to be regenerated naturally or via a blood transfusion.
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Identify the bleeding status by the blood-drop icon in the status bar or the red vignette on your screen.
- Press the corresponding hotkey or open your inventory to equip a bandage, rag, or sewing kit.
- Hold the left mouse button (or your platform's action button) to begin the "Bandage" action.
- Stay stationary until the progress bar completes to ensure the action is successful.
- Check your health and blood status; if the icon persists, you have multiple cuts and must repeat the process.
Tips
- Always keep a bandage or stack of rags in your "Quick Bar" for instant access during combat.
- Rags can be crafted by using a knife on clothing items; ensure they are not "ruined" or they will be less effective.
- Disinfect rags with Alcohol Tincture or Disinfectant Spray before use to prevent the risk of wound infection.
- Sewing kits can bandage cuts but will eventually be consumed; monitor the item's condition.
- If you are bleeding heavily, move to cover before bandaging to avoid taking further damage while stationary.
Common Mistakes
- Panic-bandaging in the open without finding cover, which makes you an easy target for follow-up shots.
- Using non-disinfected rags on deep wounds, leading to infections that require antibiotics to treat.
- Forgetting to bandage secondary cuts if you received multiple hits; check your blood icon status after the first bandage.
- Carrying bandages that are in "Ruined" condition, which will fail to function when you need them most.
