Diseases — Gas Poisoning
A complete guide to Gas Poisoning in DayZ Diseases.
Overview
Gas poisoning occurs when a player enters a contaminated zone without proper NBC protection, resulting in rapid health degradation and eventual death. It is the most lethal environmental hazard in DayZ and requires specific gear to survive and treat.
How It Works
Contaminated zones, indicated by yellow smoke and coughing audio cues, inflict chemical damage to the player's health and blood. Entering these areas without a full NBC suit (hood, jacket, pants, gloves, boots, and gas mask) causes immediate sickness. If exposed, you must exit the zone immediately and use a Pox Antidote to neutralize the toxin; otherwise, your health will drop to zero regardless of your initial vitality.
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Identify the contaminated zone by the presence of yellow smoke or by consulting a topographical map for red-marked areas.
- Equip a full 6-piece NBC suit: NBC Hood, NBC Jacket, NBC Pants, NBC Gloves, NBC Boots, and a Gas Mask (Gas Mask, GP-5, or Combat Gas Mask).
- Ensure the Gas Mask has a functional NBC Filter attached; replace it if it reaches a "Ruined" state.
- If you have been exposed and exhibit coughing or health loss, exit the gas zone immediately to a clean area.
- Open your inventory, select the Pox Antidote, and select "Inject" to stop the health decay.
- Consume Vitamins to boost your immune system while your health regenerates.
Tips
- Always check the durability of your NBC gear before entering a zone; if any piece is "Ruined," you will contract poisoning.
- Carry at least two NBC filters, as they degrade over time while inside the zone.
- If your gas mask is destroyed while inside, you have only seconds to escape before the poisoning becomes terminal.
- Use a Blood Test Kit to determine your blood type before needing a blood transfusion, as using the wrong type will cause a lethal reaction.
- Listen for the distinct sound of the gas strike warning siren if you are near a dynamic gas zone.
Common Mistakes
- Relying on Tetracycline antibiotics; these do not treat gas poisoning and will be a wasted effort.
- Entering a zone with a damaged NBC filter; filters have a limited lifespan and will stop protecting you once they run out.
- Forgetting to replace the gas mask with a proper one; improvised masks or bandanas provide zero protection against chemical zones.
- Ignoring the yellow smoke effects and assuming you have enough time to loot; the health drain is significantly faster than standard damage.
