Overview

Base building in DayZ is the primary method for long-term survival, resource storage, and territorial dominance. Failing to secure your structure properly or choosing a poor location results in total loss of gear due to raiding or easy infiltration.

How It Works

Building revolves around the Fence and Watchtower kits. By attaching logs to these kits and using a Hatchet or Axe to assemble them into frames, you create the skeleton of your base. You then use Planks and Nails to build walls, frames, and gates. A Code Lock or Combination Lock is required to secure the gate, while a Flag Pole is necessary to prevent structural decay, as it resets the lifetime of building parts within a 60-meter radius.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Locate a Hammer or Hatchet and a Hacksaw or Hand Saw to begin processing materials.
  2. Craft a Fence Kit using two Short Sticks and rope, then place the kit in your desired flat location.
  3. Attach two Wooden Logs to the kit and use a Hatchet to build the frame.
  4. Insert wooden planks into the frame slots and use a Hammer and Nails to build the bottom and top wall segments.
  5. Attach a Pliers to the gate frame with Metal Wire to create the fence gate functionality.
  6. Attach a Combination Lock to the gate by interacting with the frame and holding the action button to set your code.
  7. Construct a Flag Pole using a Flag Pole Kit and three long Wooden Logs to ensure your base remains permanent.

Tips

  • Always build your gate inward so that the frame blocks the door path, making it harder for raiders to stand inside the threshold.
  • Use a Shovel to bury wooden crates nearby for emergency stashes if your main base is compromised.
  • Prioritize building a watchtower roof early to prevent players from climbing over your walls via crates or vehicles.
  • Keep your Hammer or Hatchet in your inventory at all times; a base is only as secure as the last wall you repaired.
  • Use the Flag pole to hoist a flag; as it rises, it resets the decay timer for every built object in the radius.

Common Mistakes

  • Building on low-ground or near high-traffic spawn towns, which leads to immediate discovery and raid attempts.
  • Using simple walls without a Watchtower; skilled players can stack items to jump over single-story fence segments.
  • Neglecting to build a Flag Pole, causing your walls to despawn or lose structural integrity after a week of inactivity.
  • Failing to fully upgrade walls to "Metal" status with Metal Plates, making them vulnerable to single-hand tool raids.
