Building — Base Maintenance
A complete guide to Base Maintenance in DayZ Building.
Overview
Base maintenance is the process of resetting the decay timer on your structural components to prevent them from vanishing due to inactivity. Without regular upkeep, your walls, gates, and watchtowers will degrade and eventually de-spawn, leaving your loot vulnerable or lost entirely.
How It Works
The decay mechanic in DayZ is tied to the Flagpole. Every structural piece (walls, gates, fences) within a 60-meter radius of a raised flag experiences "lifetime" reset whenever you raise the flag back to the top. A fully raised flag grants your base a 45-day protection timer. If the flag reaches the bottom, the structural components begin to lose health and will eventually despawn.
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Craft a Flagpole by combining a Flag with a Flagpole Kit and building it using a shovel or garden hoe.
- Locate the crank handle on the base of the installed Flagpole.
- Approach the pole and interact with the crank to lower the flag rope to the ground.
- Attach your chosen flag (e.g., Flag CHEL, Flag Bear) to the rope.
- Interact with the crank again to hoist the flag to the very top of the pole.
- Verify the flag is fully extended; the 45-day decay timer now applies to all kit-built structures within the 60-meter radius.
- Return to the base at least once every 45 days to lower and re-hoist the flag to refresh the timer.
Tips
- Always check the flag status during your regular loot runs to ensure it hasn't been lowered by raiders.
- If your base is large, ensure all perimeter walls fall within the 60-meter radius of the flagpole, or they will not benefit from the decay reset.
- You do not need to replace the flag; simply cranking it down and back up is sufficient to reset the timer.
- Build your flagpole in a central location to maximize the coverage area for your base design.
Common Mistakes
- Neglecting to raise the flag to the absolute top, which fails to trigger the full 45-day timer reset.
- Building structures outside the 60-meter radius of the flagpole, causing them to decay while your main base remains protected.
- Assuming that building an item refreshes its timer; only the flagpole interaction prevents despawning.
- Forgetting to check the base during long absences, resulting in the flag reaching the bottom and structures disappearing.
