Overview

Barbed wire is a defensive upgrade for your base walls and fences that inflicts damage and causes bleeding to any player or infected attempting to pass through it. It is essential for deterring unwanted visitors and preventing raiders from climbing over your perimeter obstacles.

How It Works

The mechanic functions by attaching Barbed Wire to an existing Fence or Gate frame once it has reached the top-wire stage. Once attached, it creates a physical barrier that occupies the upper or lower segment of the structure. Players who come into physical contact with the wire take health damage and sustain cuts, which can lead to rapid blood loss if not bandaged immediately.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Build a wooden Fence frame and attach wooden planks to build the lower and upper sections.
  2. Ensure the Fence is at the "top wire" stage; you cannot attach barbed wire to a bare frame.
  3. Place a piece of Barbed Wire into your hands.
  4. Approach the exterior of the Fence or Gate.
  5. Look for the prompt "Attach Barbed Wire" and hold the left mouse button to complete the interaction.
  6. Use Pliers in your hands while looking at the attached wire to secure it, which finishes the installation.

Tips

  • Always attach the wire to the outside of your base to ensure attackers take damage while trying to dismantle or climb your walls.
  • You can place barbed wire on both the top and bottom sections of a fence to create a "double-stack" hazard.
  • If you accidentally trap yourself, you can remove the wire by holding Pliers in your hands and selecting the "Remove Barbed Wire" prompt.
  • Barbed wire does not stop bullets; it is purely a deterrent for physical traversal and vaulting.
  • Wear heavy gloves (Tactical Gloves or Working Gloves) to mitigate damage if you accidentally touch your own wire.

Common Mistakes

  • Installing barbed wire on the interior side of the fence, which leaves the exterior vulnerable and creates a hazard for your own base members.
  • Forgetting to use Pliers to finalize the attachment, which leaves the wire in an unsecured, non-functional state.
  • Failing to build the upper wooden frame before attempting to attach the wire, resulting in the inability to place it.
  • Neglecting to carry bandages, as you will likely cut yourself on your own wire during base maintenance or construction.
