Building — Combination Locks
A complete guide to Combination Locks in DayZ Building.
Overview
Combination Locks are essential security items in DayZ that prevent unauthorized access to your base by locking gates attached to fence kits. Using a 3-digit or 4-digit lock is the primary method to secure your loot, as they eliminate the need to carry physical keys that can be lost or stolen.
How It Works
A Combination Lock is attached directly to the frame of a built gate. Once attached, you set a numerical code that must be entered manually by any player wishing to open the gate. The 3-digit lock offers 1,000 potential combinations, while the 4-digit lock offers 10,000, making the latter significantly more time-consuming for raiders to "dial" open.
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Craft a Fence Kit using two sticks and one rope, then deploy it and build the frame using a hammer or hatchet and nails.
- Build the top and bottom fence sections with wood planks, then attach a Fence Kit to the frame to convert it into a gate.
- Equip the Combination Lock in your hands while standing directly in front of the gate frame.
- Aim at the gate frame until the prompt "Attach Combination Lock" appears.
- Once attached, interact with the lock to set your desired combination.
- Once the code is set, the gate can be locked or unlocked by scrolling and selecting the appropriate action.
Tips
- Always use a 4-digit lock instead of a 3-digit lock if you have the choice, as it forces raiders to spend significantly more time attempting to brute-force the code.
- If you forget your code, you must either find a way to destroy the gate or use a sledgehammer, pickaxe, or grenades to dismantle the wall to regain entry.
- When you are inside your base, keep the gate locked at all times to prevent intruders from slipping in behind you.
- Avoid using predictable codes like "1111", "1234", or your birth year, as these are the first sequences raiders test.
- Keep a spare lock in a hidden stash outside your base in case you need to replace one that has been damaged during a raid attempt.
Common Mistakes
- Leaving the gate unlocked while organizing inventory, which allows nearby players to walk in undetected.
- Placing the lock on a gate that is structurally weak; always ensure your gates are upgraded to metal or at least logs to prevent immediate destruction.
- Sharing the combination in Discord or text chat where it can be intercepted or leaked by unreliable group members.
- Forgetting to lock the gate after leaving; always double-check the lock status before running away from your base.
