Overview

Watchtowers in DayZ provide critical verticality for scouting, sniping, and defending base perimeters. They serve as the primary defensive structures for surveying surroundings while maintaining a protected firing position above ground level.

How It Works

A watchtower is built in stages using a Wooden Frame as the foundation. The structure utilizes a modular system where you attach components to specific slots on the frame. You require a Hammer or Hatchet for construction, a Hacksaw or Pliers for dismantling, and a constant supply of Nails to secure wooden planks and metal plates. Each tier requires a specific amount of materials to progress from a basic frame to a fully walled and roofed tower.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Craft a Wooden Frame by combining two Wooden Logs with a Rope.
  2. Place the Frame kit on level ground and hammer four Short Wooden Sticks into the base to create the initial structure.
  3. Attach Wooden Planks to the frame, then use a Hammer and Nails to build the floor.
  4. Build the lower, middle, and upper wall sections by attaching Planks and securing them with Nails.
  5. Once the frame is built, you can attach a Wooden Stairs kit to allow access to the top level.
  6. Install a Gate on the frame if you wish to secure the entrance with a Combination Lock.
  7. Attach Metal Plates to the exterior walls using a Hammer and Nails to increase the structure's structural integrity and raid resistance.

Tips

  • Always build your watchtower within the radius of your territory flag to prevent de-spawning.
  • Use a Combination Lock on your gate immediately; never leave a tower entrance unsecured.
  • Build multiple levels to gain a height advantage, but ensure you have enough planks for stairs on every level.
  • Orient your firing windows toward high-traffic areas or your base entrance for maximum defensive utility.
  • Keep a surplus of Nails and Planks inside the tower for rapid repairs after a raid attempt.

Common Mistakes

  • Building on uneven terrain, which causes floating structures or inaccessible gaps.
  • Forgetting to lock the gate, allowing intruders to simply walk up and claim the high ground.
  • Neglecting to build a roof, which leaves you exposed to grenades thrown from above or vantage points nearby.
  • Underestimating the quantity of Nails required, leaving a structure half-finished and vulnerable.
