Building — Gates
A complete guide to Gates in DayZ Building.
Overview
A gate serves as the primary defensive threshold for any base, allowing controlled access to your storage while preventing unauthorized entry. Converting a standard fence into a gate is essential for securing perimeters without sacrificing your ability to move in and out of your territory.
How It Works
A gate is created by modifying an existing wooden fence frame. By adding a metal wire to a fence kit construction that has a wooden frame, you enable the hinge mechanic. Once the wire is attached using pliers, the fence becomes a gate that can be opened and closed, and subsequently locked using a combination lock.
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Place a fence kit on the ground and build the wooden frame using logs and a hatchet or wood axe.
- Build the lower and upper sections of the frame using wooden planks and nails.
- Equip metal wire in your hands and interact with the fence frame to attach it.
- Use pliers to complete the wire attachment, which transforms the structure into a gate.
- Equip a combination lock in your hands and attach it to the top of the fence frame.
- Interact with the lock to set your desired 3-digit or 4-digit code.
Tips
- Always keep a pair of pliers in your inventory, as they are required to both build and dismantle gates.
- Use a 4-digit combination lock instead of a 3-digit lock to exponentially increase the time required for raiders to brute-force your code.
- Build your gate facing inward so the code dial is shielded from players outside the perimeter when the gate is closed.
- If you lose your combination lock, you must destroy the gate frame or the gate itself to regain access to your base.
- Position your gate in a location where the frame is flush against existing walls to prevent gaps that players can crouch or crawl through.
Common Mistakes
- Attaching the wire before the wooden frame is fully built, which prevents the gate from functioning as an opening door.
- Forgetting to lock the combination lock after entering or exiting the base, leaving your loot completely exposed.
- Building gates on uneven terrain that leaves gaps at the bottom, allowing players to boost or clip through.
- Storing your base-building tools outside of your secured perimeter, making it impossible to repair or modify your gate during a raid.
